Information Management, Redefined.

Story

the mission

We were to choose a company and come up with a problem that the company could possibly be experiencing at any given time. Throughout the class, we are to provide a system to fix this issue using the knowledge we gather from the class.

This semester-long project was divided into three parts, with the final part being a presentation at the end of the semester. Through the use of Microsoft Visual Studio and Visio our group was to create various activity diagrams, use cases, sequence diagrams, GUIs, and if possible, a prototype.

Task One

Document major assumptions, conclusions, problems faced, solutions proposed and future plans we have with our strategy to solve this company's problems. At this point we are also to state our goals which are to include stakeholders and others involved.

To conclude this phase, a context diagram of external entities, functional decomposition chart, and the beginning structure of an activity diagram is to be presented.

Task Two

The main takeaway from task two is to format a detailed requirements specification document. Along with this must be a feasibility report and a Database ERD showing how the system will process data.

Task Three

The final task is to present our findings to the class as well as turn in a completed report on our findings by including everything we've gathered from the first two tasks.

Multiple diagrams showing various use cases, activities, and system sequences are submitted and shown along with any potential mock-ups of GUIs or working prototypes. An NPV table is also introduced at this table to prove our systems's worthiness.

Our Project

Proposed Problem?

The Tools and Equipment department is the backbone of The Jamar Company. Because they are in the commercial and industrial construction industry, obviously nothing can be built without the use of tools. Often times these tools are very specialized, and also very expensive. The problem that has been costing the Jamar Company a great deal of money since its in inception over 100 years ago, is the loss of tools. Many times Jamar will send out tools to their workers in the field, and when the job is completed, they will only receive 25% back. Obviously this presents a problem from not only a financial standpoint, but the time it takes to constantly order new tools, paint them the Jamar colors, label them, and put them into inventory costs the tools and equipment workers a great deal of time.

It is recommended that a new system be developed and deployed so the tools can be tracked and paired with a job number that can be charged to the client so Jamar will know who to look to when tools and equipment are not returned.

So what's our agenda?

Goal

Pair tools with a job and employee so that Jamar can track where their tools are and know who to look to when they aren’t returned.

Benefits

Mitigating unnecessary capital expenditures from purchasing new tools and equipment.

System

Create, Retrieve, Update, and Delete information about tools, employees, and jobs throughout different locations.

Technology Feasibility

Use state of the art technology with user-friendly interface that requires a small amount of skill and training.

Operational Feasibility

Privately held to make employees' work much easier and more efficient.

Economic Feasibility

Cut Jamar's current $300,000 losses with payback just a year and a half after the innitial deployment.

It provides a luck at what our idea was based around. A way for this company to search tools and keep track of their inventory.
